Volunteering for ICO Rafting -- Already Trained Guides

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for ICO Rafting!

ICO looks to replenish its ranks every year with new volunteers. We're looking for anyone, 14-years-old or older, who is committed to our mission of sharing the outdoors with others.

If you are already trained as a Class III whitewater rafting guide, you can apply at any time. Already Trained Guides ("ATG") do not need to participate in our Basic Training program.

To qualify as an ATG, we are looking for skills and training comparable to our own Basic Training Program, which usually includes eight days on river and several weekday evening classroom sessions. Generally, ATGs should be familiar with catching eddies, momentum control, route planning through Class III rapids, ferrying across current, and knowing what to do when the raft flips. Mastery of these skills is not necessary; We have an apprenticeship program for volunteers who are not yet ready to guide unassisted. If you are unsure if you qualify as an ATG, please feel free to contact our Recruiting Coordinator.

The application process for ATGs is far less structured than for untrained volunteers. There is still an application process, but applications can be submitted any time. We don't have a fixed schedule for reviewing ATG applications, but we will try to review them as quickly as possible.

Usually we invite prospective ATGs on an ICO trip. There, you can become familiar with ICO and decide if ICO is a good "fit" for you (and vice-versa). Additionally, ICO leaders can evaluate your guiding ("hard") skills to be sure that they are adequate for Class III whitewater. If so, you may join ICO once your application is approved. Otherwise, we may ask you to participate in our Basic Training program.

None of the events that are required of untrained new volunteers are required for prospective ATGs. However, you are welcome and encouraged to attend one of our Q&A sessions.

For more information, feel free to contact our Volunteer Recruiting Coordinator at volunteer@icorafting.org.
