Rainier Beach's Outing to Lake Union/Arboretum

<< Our Trips to return to the list of our trips.

Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Trip Types: Sea Kayak
Plan: Guided tour from Moss Bay Rowing Club in South Lake Union. Brief kayaking training session, followed by a paddle to the Arboretum, bbq lunch in the park, and a return paddle to Lake Union. Approximate time = 3 hours.
Report: The trip had to be adjusted due to the length of paddling from South Lake Union to the Arboretum for a picnic. We determined that was too far for mostly inexperienced paddlers, and instead we paddled around Lake Union and towards the Ballard Locks, and back to Moss Bay. We then loaded into the vans and went to Gasworks park for a BBQ and games on the lawn. The students had a great time playing frisbee, football, and even just rolling down the hill.

Overall a good trip, but we DO NOT RECOMMEND using Moss Bay Rowing Club as a guide. They were able to accommodate our larger than expected student turnout, but provided only a brief pre-paddle instruction. Also, when one of our paddlers tipped, the guide was slow to respond and left it up to the agency contact to help get the paddler back into the kayak.
