Gatzert's Outing to South 47 Farm

<< Our Trips to return to the list of our trips.

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2009
Trip Types: Corn Maze, Hiking
Plan: First half of trip will be at the South 47 Farm (in Redmond), which has a corn maze and pumpkin patch.
After the farm, we will head to Gold Creek Park for a hike and field games.
Report: Went to the pumpkin farm first. There's a lot of activities to do there, so the kids want to run off and do them all at once. Leaders held the kids at bay at the petting zoo while I paid for their admission to the maze. The maze comes with a map (which is not helpful). Along the maze there are questions to answer, and based on what the answer is, you go down a certain path. It's best to split the groups into very small (4 kids, 2 leaders), because the kids read and come up with answers at different paces. Set the groups before going in, because chaos will ensue otherwise. If they answer all the questions right along the way, they all get a free mini pumpkin at the end. After corn maze, we do lunch in the covered lunch area. That usually goes well. Then there is a little area with funny shaped pumpkins, which the kids enjoy touching (but also want to know if they can have one, to which the answer is no). Then we go over to the pumpkin patch where the kids are allowed to pick out their very own pumpkin to take home, as long as it's smaller than their head. This year, the group chose the kids with the largest head and everyone chose a pumpkin smaller than that kids head. He thought it was funny, so that was ok. Then we loaded up the vans and went to a small park near by that has a trail. We did a trail walk and then played field games at the park. Everyone's favorite part is the good old fashion field games (i.e. capture the flag, snake tag, etc). There were also more snacks given out after the hike.
Biggest frustrations: setting the pace at the corn maze. The MUD! Because the kids aren't wearing their own shoes, they think it's totally ok to get soaked in mud by literally jumping into the puddles. We had to do some behavior control in that area.
Suggestions: Even if it's not raining, have them wear rain pants. The mud gets all over their pants if they decide to jump in the mud puddles.
