Plan:	Take Ferry to Olympic Peninsula, drive to Lena Lake trailhead. Hike to Lena Lake, have lunch, explore the lakeshore, hike back to vans. ~5 mile round-trip hike, 1200 feet elevation gain. Either take ferry or drive south thru Tacoma to get back to Franklin.
Report:	The ICO leaders met at Franklin just before 8:00 a.m. when the students and Mr. Dunkerley arrived. At Franklin, we passed out backpacks, water, and lunches, and then piled into the vans to make the 8:45 ferry to Bainbridge Island. All of the 13 students who had filled out permission forms came on the trip. We enjoyed breakfast on the ferry and beautiful views of the city and Puget Sound. We arrived at the Lena Lake trailhead at 11:00 and distributed boots, fleece coats, and hats to those that wanted them. We hiked along the 3-mile, forested trail to Lower Lena Lake, with educational stops to explain and observe forest ecology – thanks, Marcus! At the lake, we ate lunch at one of the campsites, played Frisbee, and explored the stream bed and mud flats. Around 2:00, we began the trek back down to the vans. We passed several groups on their way up to the lake, a few of which commented on how much fun we were having, referring to the students, “…they’ve got the biggest smiles on their faces!” We drove through Olympia for the return back to Seattle, and arrived at Franklin around 5:30 p.m. This was the first ICO trip for several of the students, and all seemed enthusiastic (despite being exhausted and sore from our hike) about joining us again. A very successful trip – thanks to everyone that helped to make it happen!
