Helping Out

How can I get involved in ICO? Every ICO group needs new volunteers.  Any help you can offer your local group is welcome, whether you are interested in:

  • helping on outings
  • helping with administrative support or equipment maintenance
  • fundraising.

Are donations to ICO tax deductible? Yes.  Please make donations payable to The Sierra Club Foundation/ICO, 85 Second St., 2nd Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105. Please specify which ICO group(s) you would like to support with your donation.

Helping On Outings

Outings need two types of volunteers: Assistant Leaders and Certified Leaders.  Each type of volunteer must meet specific requirements in order to protect the children and teen participants, as well as the volunteers, themselves.

Assistant Leaders

As an Assistant Leader, you help a trip's Certified Leader prepare for an outing (i.e. obtain food, prepare equipment), and conduct the outing.

Requirements:

  • Be a current active Sierra Club Member (provide a copy of membership card)

  • Read and Sign ICO Code of Ethics

  • Fill out Volunteer Information Sheet

  • Provide copy of drivers license and auto insurance (only if transporting any participants)

  • Pass a background check (we check for DUI’s and crimes against children.  This is a requirement for several of the agencies we work with as well)

  • Want to work with children and teens in the outdoors

Certified Leaders

As a Certified Leader you may lead outings.  You are able to determine the time, location, type and activities included on the outing.  You are responsible for having a pre-trip meeting with the agency and the participants, all the planning including transportation and food (but you can always get help from your assistants!) and returning a trip report form to the group.

Requirements:

  • Meet the requirements for an Assistant Leader

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • Read and sign the Sierra Club Outing Committee Volunteer Agreement

  • Complete and update as needed First-Aid Training (CPR not required but is helpful)

  • Serve as co-leader of two outings under two different certified leaders (you will do the duties of a certified leader but have support and assistance of other leaders)

  • Attend a one-day leader training seminar within the first year of certification

  • Be competent in the skills needed for the activities involved on a trip

  • Be approved by delegated ICO group officers

Do you want to check us out?  You may attend an outing to assist and observe without meeting the listed requirements.  However, there are some trips restricted to assistant and certified leaders (due to the partner agency on the trip).

Do you have other skills/talents you would like to volunteer to Louisville ICO?  We are always looking for individuals interested in the planning and organizing aspects of the group.

Would you like to offer financial assistance?  Donating to Inner City Outings is a tax free donation!  We are also in need of equipment if you would like to donate some gently used items.

Do you have questions?  Email Jim Champion, Chair.

Monthly meetings occur the first Tuesday of each month at one of several ICO Leaders' homes in the Louisville areaEmail Jim Champion, Chair, or contact Ellen Brehob, (502)897-6845, for directions to the next monthly meeting.  Feel free to drop by and observe.
