| OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:
The kids were challenged by the lecture and activities related to snow
crystal structure and winter survival. The snow crystal structure lecture
included an introduction into the subject of crystals, using table salt as
an example. It finished by having the kids split up into groups to
solve the paper snow crystal puzzle. The winter survival lesson included
a lecture on hypothermia and frostbite, and four winter survival scenarios
that two groups of kids were supposed to brainstorm about. The group ate at LI before driving to Pennsylvania for snowtubing, but they also brought lunch leftovers in case anyone got hungry after snowtubing. Snowtubing early in March was great, because the crowds were smaller and the weather was warmer. Most kids and adults stayed out the entire two hours. Also, the snowtubing was a big draw for the kids. |

|
SUGGESTION BOX: Bring sea salt to the crystal structure lecture,
because sea salt crystals are relatively big. We used table salt,
which is too small for the kids to see. Also, bring lincoln logs or
something similar as a model for crystals. In addition, talking about
cloud condensation nuclei is of interest to some kids. When discussing the winter survival scenarios, a difficulty arose because not all groups were familiar with the four survival scenarios. We attempted to have the kids read the scenarios out loud, but this did not work because the kids are usually afraid to read out loud. Maybe we could split the kids up into smaller groups, and having the groups work independently. We could have a crystal formation classroom and a winter survival classroom. |
