Start on I-395 S

Take LEFT ramp onto I-95 S toward WASHINGTON

OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:

The youth utilized the lessons learned from earlier orienteering outings to create their own orienteering activity. The teens seemed to enjoy the sense of autonomy and independence this activity allowed. It worked well breaking the groups down into teams of four youth and two adults. Even though they walked in an area familiar to them, their observation skills were utilized in a way they rarely get to use.

OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:

Gifford Pinchot State Park near York, PA is very nice. It has a large lake, abundant picnic tables, no entry fee, and several hiking trails. Indian Echo was a beautiful cavern. Almost all of the children said that the highlight of the trip for them was seeing the cavern.

OUTING SUGGESTIONS:

Call the park to check for the most recent trail conditions. The trail was very wet and muddy in places, so it would be good to ask what trails are best. About gear pickup, it would be helpful to have an outing schedule in the shed to make it clear whether or not there are outing conflicts.

OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:

The kids really enjoyed making plaster casts of animal tracks and walking through the woods looking at different animal signs.

OUTING SUGGESTIONS:

It isn’t essential, but would save time if they knew how to focus a pair of binoculars before the outing.
