TEAM: Digital Harbor High School

ACTIVITIES: Overnight

DESTINATION: PATC Blackburn Trail Center (No. VirginiaAppalachian Trail)

GETTING IN:

OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:

Great facility.  Activities included hikes on the Appalachian Trail, service work (cutting and moving wood) for PATC, night hikes, cooking great food, and visiting Harper’s Ferry.  The kids handled all of the meals and did an incredible job (Mexican night, pancakes, eggs and bacon, grilled cheese, chicken ptarmigan).  In addition, they took it on themselves to mop and clean the floors in the cabin –each day!

OUTING SUGGESTIONS:

We overbought food items.  Most of the items will be used in future outings, but we could have cut back on the chicken.  The frozen chicken breasts from Costco could have been cut in half.

OUTING HIGHLIGHTS:

Both the beginning hike and the maple syrup excursion were a great success.  All of the kids and adults seemed to enjoy the impromptu hike, though some of the kids were worried about the repercussions of getting their shoes muddy once they returned home.  The guide for the maple syrup excursion was fantastic and really dealt well with the individual needs of our kids in the midst of a group of strangers.

OUTING SUGGESTIONS:

Taking the kids into the resource center became a bit chaotic because the gift shop was located in the middle of the center.  We had to hover over the kids for fear of slippery fingers and later found that one of the kids had been successful in lifting an item.
