Atlanta Inner City Outings
An outreach program of the Sierra Club
Sierra Club Inner City Outings is a community outreach program providing
opportunities for urban youth and adults to explore, enjoy and protect
the natural world. Most of the participants are urban youth. The goal
of the Atlanta ICO program is to help these young people discover
the beauty of wild places, to foster an appreciation for nature, and
to help them acquire the necessary skills to enjoy these places safely.
Through active involvement with nature, the program increases participant's
environmental awareness, interpersonal skills and self esteem.
ICO leaders work in cooperation with
community agencies or schools that want to provide outings for their
members, but who do not have the resources needed to do so. Agency staff
work closely with ICO leaders to make the outings successful experiences.

Atlanta ICO furnishes the equipment to run the trips and covers all
trip expenses, including transportation and food. We are an all-volunteer
organization. Atlanta ICO has become one of the most active and largest
of the 50 ICO groups nationwide since it was established in 1988.
In 2005, we ran 29 trips involving 200 different kids. Our volunteers
contributed approximately 3,500 volunteer hours to ICO.
